Digital Rights Management (DRM) - How It Works
How It Works
There are several steps to accessing protected content.
1) User requests content
2) Windows Media checks for validity of license
- if license exists, and is valid, then content plays. If license does not exist, or is invalid then
3) Acquire License Process - This could be a form, an e-commerce site, or basically any web page. Once
the process on that page is completed, the page would return back to the DRM process that the license is valid and
4) Get license from Certificate Server - The Certificate server is a separate computer that issues alicense. This
license can be temporary, permanent and have a variety of parameters attached to it.
5) The Content Begins Playing.
Business Scenarios
Digital Rights Management (DRM) protects your content and offers a variety of solutions including:
Subscription Services - Purchase single video/audio track - Charge users for a subscription (weekly, monthly, annualy, etc) to access your content. The content will play until the subscription is revoked, at which time the content sill simply stop working...regardless of where the file is located.
Examples:
Training material - companies with training videos could offer their employees a "subscription" that is valid as long as they are employees. Upon their termination, the subscription would be reversed.
Entertainment
- Owners of significant entertainment content can offer their viewers a subscription to their content. Remember that the subscription does not necessairly have to cost money. It could just require registration. And, it can always be time limited.
Rental Services - Similiar to subscription, rental services can allow a much more "short term" solution. Content can be protected by time, or number of
views, or any combination of both. This is perfect for owners of quality content that may want to monetize it as many ways a possible.
Examples:
Entertainment
- Entertainment companies can charge for views of their content.
Training
material - Show somebody how to do something for a day or week. This would be perfect for people with educational content such as auto repair, self help, music lessons, etc.
Video on Demand - Allow the customer to select what content he wishes to view, this could happen before or after he has been approved through the DRM process.
Pay Per View - PPV is just a simple add-on to the DRM system. You can incorporate your own Transaction Processing, or you may utilize ours..
Live Content Protection - Protect your live streams by preventing unauthorized access. With our DRM/PPV solution you can require advanced registration, on the spot registration, individual passwords, or a common group password.
Examples:
Corporate Training - Webcast your corporate training content with confidence knowing that your competition cannot view the stream. This solution actualy provides you better security than distributing videos, or printed material.
Entertainment
- charge for concerts, movie premiers, etc.
Preview & Purchase - Watch the video, and then provide the viewer with the ability to purchase it for storage on his home computer.
Distance Learning - Educational facilities can make sure their coursework only goes to their students, and not to those not authorized to see it.
Pricing for protecting your content starts at just $50/month. Please contact your sales representative with details on the type of protection you would like to have for your content.
